The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to seek both local and international assistance to tackle Nigeria’s ongoing insecurity, or to step down from office. The appeal was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, in a statement released on Sunday.

According to the PDP, the current administration’s approach to combating insecurity—particularly in northern Nigeria—has been inadequate. The party highlighted a series of kidnappings in the region that have caused severe human suffering and disrupted communities. It argued that closing schools to prevent further kidnappings would be a misguided strategy that could inadvertently serve the terrorists’ goal of denying children access to education.

The PDP emphasized that the federal government bears the primary responsibility for ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. In light of the situation, the party called on the government to develop a comprehensive plan rather than rely on simplistic solutions. It suggested implementing the National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence‑Free Schools, which provides a framework for preventing and responding to attacks on educational institutions.

The party’s call for action comes amid growing concerns about escalating insecurity in Nigeria. The statement stressed the need for a more effective, sustained approach that addresses the root causes of the problem instead of short‑term measures. By seeking local and international assistance, the government could leverage additional resources and expertise to restore security and stability.

The ongoing insecurity has significant implications for the region and the international community, resulting in human suffering, displacement, and economic disruption. Therefore, it is essential for the government to adopt a proactive, comprehensive strategy rather than rely on ad‑hoc measures. The PDP’s appeal serves as a reminder of the urgent and sustained attention required to address this critical issue.
