A prominent Nigerian musician, Obesere, was allegedly attacked by a group of thugs led by Michael Abbey, also known as “Emir,” during a performance in Ondo State on Friday. The incident occurred at a burial ceremony held at the Government Field in Okitipupa, where Obesere was performing as part of the Fuji music entertainment.
According to eyewitnesses, the thugs stormed the venue without warning, sparking chaos and violence. Obesere’s manager tried to shield him but was stabbed with a broken bottle. The musician’s personal belongings—including his mobile phone, wristwatch, gold chain, and a bag containing approximately N4 million in cash—were reportedly stolen.
A witness, Bosede Akinyemi, described the incident as a “disgraceful act,” noting that a gang of local thugs attacked Obesere and his band while they were on stage. The sudden outbreak of violence forced guests to flee for safety, disrupting the event.
The attack has raised concerns about the safety and security of artists and performers in Nigeria. As a well‑known figure in the Nigerian music industry, Obesere’s performance was expected to be a highlight of the burial ceremony, but instead the event was marred by violence and theft, leaving the musician and his crew shaken. The incident underscores the need for increased security measures at public events, especially those featuring high‑profile artists.
As the investigation continues, fans and supporters of Obesere are calling for greater protection for artists and performers in the country. The music community has expressed outrage and concern, urging stronger action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
