OpenAI, a leading artificial‑intelligence firm, projects that by 2030 roughly 220 million of its weekly ChatGPT users will convert to paid subscriptions. This estimate assumes a total of 2.6 billion weekly users, with about 8.5 % opting for the chatbot’s services. If realized, ChatGPT would rank among the world’s largest subscription‑based businesses.

As of July, approximately 35 million users—about 5 % of ChatGPT’s weekly active base—already pay for “Plus” or “Pro” plans, priced at $20 and $200 per month respectively. This existing subscriber base provides a foundation for the company’s ambitious growth targets. OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate is expected to reach around $20 billion by the end of this year, despite the firm still posting significant losses.

In the first half of 2025, OpenAI generated about $4.3 billion in revenue, a 16 % increase over the prior year. However, the company also incurred substantial research and development expenses, totaling $2.5 billion, largely driven by AI development and ChatGPT operations. To diversify its income, OpenAI plans to launch new products—including shopping‑ and advertising‑driven features—anticipated to contribute roughly 20 % of its revenue.

Recently, OpenAI introduced a personal shopping assistant for ChatGPT, opening the possibility of monetizing through advertisements or commission‑based sales. This strategic move highlights the firm’s effort to explore alternative revenue streams and lessen its reliance on subscriptions. As OpenAI expands its user base and rolls out new features, it will face growing competition in the AI market.

The projected growth of ChatGPT’s user base and revenue underscores the substantial potential of AI‑powered technologies to transform business operations and customer interactions. As OpenAI and other sector players continue to innovate and broaden their offerings, the global AI market is poised for rapid growth and evolution in the coming years. With its bold projections and strategic initiatives, OpenAI is positioned to play a leading role in shaping the future of AI and its applications.
