Senator Barau I. Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, has urged Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to focus on the state’s security challenges rather than politicising them. The call follows allegations from the Kano State Government that one of Senator Barau’s statements could undermine ongoing security efforts. In a statement released by the senator’s media aide, Ismail Mudashir, Barau dismissed the accusations as false and malicious, stressing that insecurity across the country—including bandit attacks in parts of Kano—requires cooperation from all stakeholders.
Barau challenged the government to provide evidence supporting their claims, asserting that he has consistently worked with relevant parties to address insecurity in Kano and throughout Nigeria. As the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, he urged Governor Yusuf to take governance more seriously, noting that misgovernance has eroded Kano’s prosperity and that the state could regain its former glory if the right decisions are made.
The senator listed several security interventions he has supported in the state: providing vehicles and equipment to police formations, renovating sections of the state police headquarters, and constructing police stations. He has also facilitated the establishment of training institutions for security agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigeria Police Service Commission, and installed solar streetlights in many communities to enhance night patrols.
Barau’s office emphasized his significant contributions to improving security in Kano and advised the state government to follow his example rather than attack his character. The exchange underscores the ongoing challenges of addressing insecurity in the region. As Kano grapples with bandit attacks and other security concerns, cooperation among stakeholders is essential for effective solutions. Prioritising governance and security can help restore Kano’s former prosperity and ensure the safety of its citizens.
