VP Shettima seeks stronger executive-legislature ties — Daily Nigerian

Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized the need for deeper collaboration between Nigeria’s executive and legislative branches. Speaking at a dinner hosted by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for members of the National Assembly at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima stressed that the two arms must work together to build a nation that serves all citizens. He noted that the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, enjoys the most harmonious relationship with the legislature since the return to democracy in 1999, attributing this to the leadership, foresight and collective resolve of both branches.

Shettima, a former member of the National Assembly, pointed out that many key officials in the presidency—including the president, the First Lady and himself—are alumni of the federal legislature. This shared background, he said, has fostered understanding and familiarity between the executive and legislative arms. He added that democracy thrives when each branch recognizes and respects the roles and responsibilities of the other.

The vice president commended the First Lady for her commitment to protecting the interests and dignity of the National Assembly and for promoting women’s participation in governance. He also acknowledged the nation’s challenges, particularly insecurity, and called for a collective effort to address them. Shettima urged lawmakers and executive officials to cooperate, drawing on the wisdom of their predecessors, to build a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.

Earlier, Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured that the National Assembly stands united in supporting the president’s efforts to tackle security challenges. House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas thanked the First Lady for her contributions to national development and advocated for greater representation of women in governance. Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the All Progressives Governors’ Forum, echoed this call, describing women as effective managers of homes who would excel in key government positions, and urged the allocation of more seats for women at all levels of government.

The dinner, attended by members of the National Assembly and other senior officials, reinforced the executive’s and legislature’s commitment to work together for a better Nigeria. This collaboration is expected to yield positive results, especially in addressing security concerns and promoting economic growth and development.
