2027: How to lead PDP to victory - IBB gives Party National Chairman tips

Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, urged the newly appointed factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kabiru Turaki, to rebuild and reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Babangida made the appeal during Turaki’s courtesy visit, accompanied by members of the PDP National Working Committee, to his residence in Minna, the capital of Niger State. The discussion focused on party renewal, national stability, and the strengthening of political structures across the country.

Babangida praised the party leadership for aligning with the government and the people of Niger State during a challenging period, reaffirming the PDP’s deep national roots. He observed that the PDP remains the most structurally grounded political organization in Nigeria, recalling his own past effort to institutionalise a two‑party system. He advised Turaki to prioritize tact, broad consultation, and inclusive leadership as he undertakes the party’s reconstruction. Babangida urged Turaki to correct past mistakes, seek the opinions of the people, and work toward building a peaceful and progressive party.

The former Head of State shared an anecdote about a military administrator who met a resident unaware of a military government, underscoring the enduring weight of party structures in Nigeria. Turaki expressed gratitude for Babangida’s guidance, stating that the PDP would continue to draw on his leadership experience and historical understanding of the nation’s political evolution. He reiterated the party’s commitment to resetting, strengthening its organs, and restoring its winning spirit before the 2027 elections.

The delegation had originally planned a special appreciation visit but merged it with a condolence visit due to recent abductions in Niger State. The meeting highlights the importance of rebuilding and repositioning the PDP as a stabilising force in Nigeria. With the 2027 general elections approaching, the party’s ability to correct past errors and reinforce its structures will be crucial. As a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape, the PDP’s renewal efforts will be closely watched by stakeholders and citizens alike, and its success will depend on its capacity to adapt, innovate, and respond to the evolving needs of the Nigerian people.
