Babangida Urges PDP To Rebuild Ahead Of 2027 Elections

Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has urged the new factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kabiru Turaki, to rebuild and reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Babangida made the call during a courtesy visit by Turaki and members of the PDP National Working Committee to his residence in Minna, Niger state capital.

The meeting centered on party renewal, national stability, and strengthening political structures nationwide. Babangida commended the party leadership for identifying with the government and people of Niger State during a challenging period, reaffirming the PDP’s deep national roots. He noted that the PDP remains the most structurally grounded political organisation in the country, recalling his past attempt to institutionalise a two-party system.

Babangida advised Turaki to prioritise tact, broad consultation, and inclusive leadership as he rebuilds the party. He encouraged Turaki to correct past mistakes, seek people’s opinions, and work towards building a peaceful and progressive party. The former Head of State shared an anecdote about a military administrator who encountered a resident unaware of a military government, highlighting the enduring weight of party structures in Nigeria.

Turaki expressed gratitude for Babangida’s guidance, saying the PDP would continue to tap from his leadership experience and historical understanding of Nigeria’s political evolution. The PDP chairman reiterated the party’s commitment to resetting, strengthening its organs, and restoring its winning spirit ahead of 2027. The delegation had initially planned a special appreciation visit but merged it with a condolence visit due to recent abductions in Niger State.

The meeting underscores the significance of rebuilding and repositioning the PDP as a stabilising force in Nigeria. With the 2027 general elections approaching, the party’s ability to correct past mistakes and strengthen its structures will be crucial. As a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape, the PDP’s renewal efforts will be closely watched by stakeholders and citizens alike. The party’s success in this endeavour will depend on its ability to adapt, innovate, and respond to the evolving needs of the Nigerian people.
