The Ohanaeze Youth Council, a socio‑political organization, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to run as the vice‑presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 general elections. This suggestion forms part of a proposed strategy to strengthen the party’s chances of winning, with Peter Obi positioned as the presidential candidate.
Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, president of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, argues that the Obi‑Abubakar pairing would be a viable calculation for the ADC to defeat incumbent President Bola Tinubu in 2027. He emphasizes that Peter Obi’s potential presidency could usher in a national rebirth for Nigeria.
The council’s advice reflects the current political landscape, noting that the ADC’s national chairman hails from the northern region. In this context, Igboayaka contends it would be reasonable for Atiku Abubakar to support a southern candidate for the presidency, especially since southern Nigeria is slated to complete its tenure in 2031. Consequently, the Ohanaeze Youth Council believes the ADC should select its presidential candidate from the South for the 2027 election.
Criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration as having failed Nigerians, the council’s president suggests that a Peter Obi–Atiku Abubakar ticket could provide a viable solution to the country’s challenges. He stresses that Atiku Abubakar should prioritize national interests by willingly deputizing Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.
The Ohanaeze Youth Council has vowed to resist any attempts to further marginalize the Igbo nation. As the 2027 elections approach, the council’s proposal has sparked interest in potential alliances and strategies that could shape the outcome of the polls. The ADC’s decision on its candidates will be crucial in determining the party’s chances of success in the upcoming elections.
