The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has taken a significant step by impeaching its chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Ogar Eba, over allegations of financial misconduct and administrative high‑handedness. The decision was made by the State Working Committee (SWC) at the party’s secretariat in Calabar on Thursday.
Eba, who has served as chairman since October 2021, was accused of embezzlement, misappropriation of party funds, and failure to pay stipends to party officials, among other allegations. The SWC, comprising chapter chairmen and stakeholders, said his conduct had hindered party operations and strained relationships across the state. The impeachment motion was moved by State Welfare Secretary Okara Ekawu and seconded by State Treasurer Dr. Matthew Egom. The committee claimed to have thoroughly investigated the allegations before reaching a unanimous decision.
Eba has been directed to hand over all party property and documents to the acting chairman, pending further directives from the National Executive Committee (NEC). Earlier, the Forum of APC Chapter Chairmen had called for his removal, citing non‑payment of stipends for over three months and the worsening welfare of ward and chapter officials. Forum Chairman Kelvin Nyong described the stipend default as unprecedented and accused Eba of creating divisions within the party.
The leadership change is seen as necessary for stability and effective administration, with party leaders reaffirming their loyalty to Governor Bassey Otu. Eba had faced similar opposition in the past, with party stalwarts urging his removal over related allegations. The controversy was further fueled by his decision to organize a grand airport reception for former governor Ben Ayade, which was perceived as a slight to the current leadership.
The impeachment marks a significant development in the APC’s efforts to address internal conflicts and ensure effective governance in Cross River State. As the party moves forward, it is likely to focus on rebuilding and strengthening its structures to improve performance in future elections. The NEC is expected to provide further guidance, which may have implications for the party’s national leadership and overall strategy.
