The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict on the state’s withheld local‑government allocations, saying it has exposed the unconstitutional directives issued by Attorney‑General of the Federation Abubakar Malami. The party described the judgment as a reaffirmation of judicial authority that lifted the veil on the erroneous orders from the Attorney‑General.
According to the PDP, the Attorney‑General had previously instructed the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Finance to channel local‑government funds to illegal entities in the state. The party warned that the crisis was a needless confrontation fueled by directives compelling sacked chairmen—appointed through a flawed process—to open bank accounts despite existing court rulings.
The Court of Appeal in Akure had earlier upheld the validity of the February 22, 2025 local‑government election conducted by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC). Despite this clear judicial guidance, the Attorney‑General still authorized payments to individuals without legal mandate, simply because they were members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP said the Supreme Court’s ruling has exposed the illegalities and partisan arrogance of those actions while restoring constitutional order.
The party urged all stakeholders to abide by the court’s decision and avoid further manipulation by desperate APC elements bent on derailing democracy. It commended the patience of the Awotunde‑led Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Osun State, describing the group as resilient in the face of provocation, and expressed appreciation to the people of Osun for their support throughout the challenging period.
The PDP maintained that the only legally recognized council chairmen in Osun are those elected on February 22, 2025, whose mandate was affirmed by the Court of Appeal. It called on security agencies to remain neutral and warned that protecting individuals removed by court orders invites anarchy. The Supreme Court’s verdict has significant implications for the state’s local‑government administration, and the PDP urged all stakeholders to respect the rule of law and the democratic process, emphasizing adherence to constitutional principles and the importance of judicial authority in resolving disputes.
