Imo Labour Party elects new state executive

The Labour Party’s Imo State chapter has elected a new executive committee to guide the party into the next general elections. The election followed the conclusion of the party’s ward and local government area congresses, and was witnessed by Independent National Electoral Commission officials and party members from the state’s 27 local government areas at the party office in Owerri.

Callistus Ihejiagwa was re‑elected as State Chairman through a consensus agreement. National Vice Chairman for the Southeast zone, Chidi Igala, represented the National Chairman at the congress and stressed the importance of transparency in the party’s leadership. He noted that the party had learned from its 2023 election experience, becoming more careful in selecting leaders, and hinted that internal crises after that election had been resolved. Igala urged the new executives to involve all party members in decision‑making to ensure effective participation and to prevent similar disputes in the future.

Chairman Ihejiagwa pledged to uphold the party’s authority and provide credible leadership both in Imo State and nationwide. He described the Labour Party as a mass movement aimed at rescuing the nation from poor leadership and affirmed his commitment to advancing the party democratically to state and national leadership positions. Criticising the ruling All Progressives Congress for failing the people, he said the Labour Party is ready to offer an alternative government.

With the new leadership in place, the Labour Party is poised to strengthen its presence in Imo State and potentially make significant gains in the upcoming general elections. Its focus on transparency, inclusivity, and credible leadership may resonate with voters seeking change, and the party’s efforts to reposition itself as a viable alternative to the ruling party will be closely watched as Nigeria prepares for its next electoral cycle.
