The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could face demise if internal conflicts and disregard for court judgments continue. Speaking at the 104th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, he stressed that party leaders must respect judicial processes and uphold democratic principles. Wike condemned a PDP faction for holding an “illegal convention” despite two substantive judgments from the Federal High Court, and he questioned why the same faction then turned to a State High Court for recognition after ignoring the federal rulings. He argued that such actions erode the party’s integrity and threaten its future.
Wike cautioned that the party’s leadership must not place selfish interests above the party’s well‑being, calling for commitment, honesty, and respect for the rule of law. He urged members to back lawful leadership and unite to rebuild the PDP, which has existed since 1998. Meanwhile, the NEC has been advised to form a Caretaker Committee to guide the party as the current National Working Committee’s tenure draws to a close. Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa said this transition plan conforms to the party constitution and aims to ensure administrative continuity, unity, and stability.
The establishment of caretaker leadership in certain states and zones, such as Anambra and the South‑East, is already underway to prevent leadership gaps and strengthen party organization. The BoT highlighted the need for internal reforms, restoration of confidence among members, and stricter compliance with the rule of law. Ongoing internal conflicts and court battles have raised doubts about the PDP’s ability to regain public confidence. As the party navigates these challenges, its leaders must prioritize democratic principles, respect for the law, and the interests of its members to secure its survival and relevance in Nigerian politics. The NEC’s decision on the Caretaker Committee and the party’s handling of internal issues will be decisive for the PDP’s future direction.
