Rivers APC Defends Strategy Amid Calls for Wike to Join

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State has suffered a notable setback with the defection of Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya, a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The move comes amid heightened political tension in the state, as Governor Agbu Kefas is expected to formally join the APC in the coming weeks.

In a letter released to the press in Jalingo, Senator Ikenya explained that his decision to leave the APC was the result of “careful consideration, due diligence, and wide consultations.” Titled “Defection Notification by Sen. Joel Danlami Ikenya,” the letter expressed his pleasure at formally joining the PDP, crediting the party with providing the platform for all his previous political positions. He said he feels loved and valued by the PDP and thanked his supporters for their “love and solidarity” throughout his decades‑long career.

Ikenya’s defection is viewed as a major blow to the APC in Taraba, given his prominence and influence in the region. Governor Kefas’s anticipated shift to the APC is expected to further reshape the state’s political landscape, potentially prompting a realignment of forces and interests.

The PDP has historically been a dominant force in Taraba, and Ikenya’s move may be seen as a strategic effort to strengthen the party ahead of future elections. With the APC and PDP vying for influence, the coming weeks and months are likely to be marked by intense political activity and maneuvering. Observers will need to monitor how these developments affect the balance of power in Taraba State and the broader Nigerian political scene.
