‘We’ll clear Zamfara of bandits’ — OPFY commander vows

Maj.-Gen. Bello Idris, the new Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadarin Daji—also known as Operation Northwest—has pledged to eradicate banditry in Zamfara State. Assuming command in November, Idris made the declaration during a courtesy visit to Governor Dauda Lawal in Gusau, emphasizing that eliminating banditry in Zamfara is essential for restoring security across Nigeria. He said the military will adopt a decisive and aggressive strategy against criminal groups.

Idris, who previously served in the Defence Headquarters Department of Transformation and Innovation, noted that the armed forces will intensify operations to dismantle the networks sustaining criminal activities in the state. He expressed concern that many bandits reside within local communities or enjoy strong support among residents. This support will be confronted and neutralized through enhanced intelligence gathering and a heightened security presence.

To achieve these goals, Idris announced the introduction of new operational concepts focused on efficiency, community engagement, and improved coordination. He also disclosed that additional manpower, logistics, and equipment will be deployed to support the renewed offensive, adopting a mobile and aggressive posture to flush out the criminals.

Governor Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the military operation, stating that the state has procured 30 armoured personnel carriers to strengthen the fight against banditry. He praised Idris as a “son of the soil,” whose familiarity with the terrain will contribute to the success of the renewed offensive, and reiterated that his administration will not negotiate with bandits under any circumstances.

As Theatre Commander, Idris oversees joint operations in the North West and parts of the North Central, covering seven states: Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Sokoto, and Zamfara. The renewed offensive against banditry in Zamfara State marks a significant development in ongoing efforts to restore security in the region. With the deployment of additional resources and a new strategy, the military aims to make substantial progress in combating banditry and related criminal activities.
