A faction within the Accord Party has conducted a parallel primary election, resulting in the emergence of Mr. Clement Bamigbola as its candidate for the 2026 Osun State governorship election. This development comes just four days after Governor Ademola Adeleke was declared the party’s flagbearer in a separate exercise.
The earlier primary, held under the leadership of Maxwell Mgbudem, had produced Adeleke as the candidate. However, a segment of the party rejected this outcome, citing that Mgbudem is not the legally recognized national chairman of the Accord Party. This disagreement led to a fresh primary being conducted by the dissenting faction.
On Sunday, approximately 300 delegates representing the Accord Party from various parts of Osun State gathered at Regina Suite, Osogbo, to conduct the new primary. Through a voice vote, Bamigbola was chosen as the factional candidate. Hon. Olufemi Ogundare, Chairman of the Primary Committee, officially declared him as the party’s candidate for the 2026 Osun State governorship election.
The emergence of two candidates from the same party has created a complex situation, with both Adeleke and Bamigbola claiming to be the legitimate flagbearer. The Accord Party’s internal conflict stems from a dispute over the leadership of the party, with some members recognizing Mgbudem as the national chairman and others rejecting his claim.
