Heavy rainfall in Safi, a coastal town about 300 kilometres south of Rabat, triggered deadly flash floods on Sunday, killing at least 37 people. An hour of intense rain unleashed a torrent of muddy water that inundated homes and shops, swept away cars and cut off many roads. The flooding damaged at least 70 houses and businesses in Safi’s old city, and rescue teams continued searching for additional victims. By Sunday evening the water had receded enough to allow a more thorough assessment of the damage.

Authorities reported 32 injuries, most of which have since been discharged from hospitals. The Moroccan weather service warned that further heavy rain is expected on Tuesday, a development that could worsen the situation. The country is already coping with heavy rain and snowfall in the Atlas Mountains after seven consecutive years of severe drought that left major reservoirs dry. While the recent rains bring much‑needed water to parched regions, they also raise the risk of flooding and landslides.

Government and emergency services are focusing on providing aid to those affected and preventing further damage. The situation in Safi is being closely monitored, and the predicted Tuesday rainfall will be a major concern for authorities. Ongoing support and effective mitigation measures will be essential to protect citizens and reduce the impact of future flooding events.
