NLC demands immediate release of Osun LG allocations

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Sokoto State has suspended its planned protest against worsening insecurity and has instead organized special prayers for peace and safety throughout the state. This decision follows consultations and a resolution by the State Executive Council, in line with a directive from the NLC national headquarters.

Abdullahi Jungle, the state NLC Chairman, noted that insecurity continues to affect many local government areas in Sokoto and neighboring states. He explained that stakeholders agreed special prayers were necessary, reflecting the religious and cultural practices of the people of Sokoto during periods of crisis. Consequently, the NLC, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Action Committee and other partners, engaged Islamic clerics to offer prayers for peace and security. Special prayer sessions were held at the NLC secretariat, attended by Islamic scholars, labour leaders, and community members.

Jungle called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address insecurity in Sokoto and surrounding states, urging authorities to provide adequate support to security agencies. He emphasized that suspending the protest does not mean labour has abandoned its demand for improved security; rather, it reflects a peaceful approach to the current situation.

The suspension of the protest comes as insecurity remains a significant challenge in the region. The NLC’s decision to opt for prayers is seen as a move to promote peace and stability while highlighting the need for the government to take concrete steps to address security concerns. The labour leader’s call for increased support to security agencies underscores the necessity of a comprehensive approach to tackling insecurity in the area. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the NLC’s demands and whether the special prayers will positively impact security in Sokoto State.
