The Nigerian government has urged BUA Foods to speed up the completion of its sugar factory in Lafiagi, Kwara State, as part of a broader push for self‑sufficiency in sugar production. The appeal was made by Minister of State for Industry Senator John Owan Enoh during an inspection of sugar projects across the country, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to accelerate domestic sugar output.
During the visit, Enoh highlighted that the scale of infrastructure and the level of investment at the BUA Foods project demonstrate a strong commitment to the backward‑integration programme’s objectives. He stressed that operators must move from planning to full production, as mandated by the President, and emphasized the urgent need to expand sugarcane cultivation to match the factory’s capacity. The minister was accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council, Mr. Kamar Bakrin.
Enoh reaffirmed the federal government’s dedication to working with serious investors, traditional institutions, and host communities to advance the sugar industry. The BUA Foods factory is a key component of Nigeria’s strategy to reduce reliance on imported sugar and achieve self‑sufficiency. The backward‑integration programme, which promotes local sugar production, remains central to this effort.
