Tinubu Vows to Implement Local Government Autonomy

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government autonomy in Nigeria. During a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) state governors at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu emphasized the need for practical and effective implementation.

The President urged governors to refrain from interfering with local government funds, stressing that autonomy without financial backing is ineffective. He stated, “To me, local government autonomy is and must be effective. Let us give them their money directly, as this is the truth and compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling.”

Tinubu also advised governors to be adaptable and engaged in the affairs of their respective states, from the state level to local governments. He noted that as leaders, they must be flexible, tolerant, and involved in addressing the needs and concerns of their constituents.

The Supreme Court’s judgment on local government autonomy is a significant development in Nigeria’s decentralization efforts. The ruling aims to enhance the independence and effectiveness of local governments, allowing them to better address the needs of their communities. By committing to implement the judgment, President Tinubu’s administration seeks to promote good governance, accountability, and transparency at the grassroots level.

The implementation of local government autonomy is expected to have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s governance structure and development. It is likely to lead to more efficient allocation of resources, improved service delivery, and enhanced citizen participation in local decision-making processes. As the government moves forward with implementation, it will be essential to ensure that the process is inclusive, transparent, and responsive to the needs of local communities.

The President’s assurance is a positive step towards strengthening local governance in Nigeria. The success of this initiative will depend on the collaborative efforts of federal, state, and local authorities, as well as the active engagement of citizens and civil society organizations. As the country navigates this critical phase of governance reform, the international community will be watching with interest, recognizing the potential of decentralized governance to drive sustainable development and stability in Nigeria.
