In February 2025, Tinubu signed the N54.99 trillion 2025 budget into law, but the government has not released an implementation report, a document essential for assessing the previous year’s performance.
Civic organization BudgIT has raised concerns over this lack of accountability and transparency. On social media the group warned, “There is still no budget implementation report for 2025. The 2026 budget is almost here, yet we don’t know how the 2025 budget performed? No report. No accountability.” The organization argues that without a clear picture of how the 2025 budget was executed, it is difficult to evaluate the government’s fiscal management, decision‑making processes, and to hold officials accountable for spending and policy choices.
The omission of a 2025 implementation report undermines citizens’ and stakeholders’ ability to scrutinize public resources. As the 2026 budget approaches, civic groups and other stakeholders stress the need for the government to prioritize transparency and accountability. Providing a detailed report on the 2025 budget’s execution would demonstrate a commitment to responsible governance and lay a solid foundation for the upcoming fiscal plan.
