Plateau Governor Defects to APC

The North-Central All Progressives Congress Forum has expressed gratitude to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for defecting to the party from the Peoples Democratic Party. The governor’s defection was confirmed by APC national chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda at the party’s 14th national caucus meeting in Abuja.

According to the North-Central APC Forum, Governor Mutfwang has instructed his aides to join him in the APC. The Forum described the defection as “historic” and “strategic,” noting that the North-Central region now has six APC governors. The Forum had been campaigning for Mutfwang to join the APC since April 2024, citing his achievements in office and the potential for greater success within a stable political platform.

The North-Central APC Forum believes that Mutfwang’s defection will benefit not only Plateau State but also the entire region. The Forum has assured the governor of its full support and called on stakeholders to rally behind him. The Forum also reiterated its pledge to deliver six million votes for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, noting that the goal is on track now that all states in the region are aligned with the APC.

The Forum thanked President Tinubu for providing the leadership that facilitated Mutfwang’s defection. The move is seen as a significant development in the region’s political landscape, with the North-Central zone now solidly behind the APC. The Forum’s efforts to recruit Mutfwang began in April 2024, with a formal invitation and subsequent meetings with party leaders in Plateau State.

Despite initial opposition from some APC leaders in Plateau State, the North-Central APC Forum maintained that those against Mutfwang’s defection were motivated by selfish interests rather than the party’s well-being. The Forum accused party national chairman Yilwatda of attempting to block Mutfwang’s entry, allegedly due to his own gubernatorial ambitions in 2027.

With Mutfwang’s defection now official, the North-Central APC Forum is poised to leverage the development to strengthen the party’s position in the region. As the 2027 elections approach, the Forum’s commitment to delivering six million votes for President Tinubu will be closely watched, and Mutfwang’s role in the APC is expected to be a key factor in the party’s fortunes in the North-Central region.
