Putin accuses Kyiv of rejecting peaceful settlement, signals openness to talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine is unwilling to end the war through peaceful means, while stressing that Moscow remains open to dialogue. At a year‑end news conference in Moscow, he claimed Russia had detected signals from Kyiv suggesting a possible willingness to talk, even though Ukraine has reportedly rejected a negotiated settlement. Putin said Russia is ready to resolve the conflict peacefully, based on principles outlined in June of last year, provided the underlying causes of the crisis are addressed.

The leader’s remarks come as the war approaches its fourth year and diplomatic activity intensifies after a renewed U.S.–backed push for peace talks. Nevertheless, negotiations remain stalled because Moscow’s and Kyiv’s demands are sharply divergent. Putin warned that Russia might seek to expand its territorial gains if Ukraine and its Western allies reject Moscow’s peace conditions, which include international recognition of Russian control over four partially occupied Ukrainian regions and Crimea, annexed in 2014. Ukraine has firmly rejected these terms.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s full‑scale invasion in February 2022, continues to devastate civilians, especially in frontline areas such as Zaporizhzhia, where fighting and shelling persist. The war has created severe humanitarian challenges, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. While the United States and other Western nations are actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, a breakthrough remains elusive. As the fighting shows no sign of abating, the international community remains focused on finding a peaceful solution to a crisis that has far‑reaching consequences for the region and beyond.
