The Ogun State chapter of the Labour Party has extended an invitation to Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, to join their ranks and become the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections. This development was made public during a visit by Labour Party executives, led by South West Vice Chairman Abayomi Arabambi and state chairman Mrs Olubukola Soyoye, to Showunmi’s residence in Abeokuta, the state capital.
According to Arabambi, the Labour Party has been monitoring Showunmi’s activities and is impressed by his commitment to good governance and democratic ideals. The party believes that Showunmi has the necessary experience and pedigree to provide a refreshing change for the residents of Ogun State, who have suffered under the current All Progressives Congress government. Arabambi emphasized that the state’s infrastructure, education, and urbanization policies are in disarray, and that the people of Ogun State deserve better.
Showunmi, who described the Labour Party as a party with a stable ideology, likened it to workers’ parties in other parts of the world. He noted that the party’s performance in the 2023 general elections, where it polled over six million votes, demonstrates its significance in Nigeria’s political landscape. Showunmi expressed gratitude for the invitation, describing it as the greatest honour he has ever received. He vowed to give serious consideration to the request, which will require him to leave the PDP, a party he has been a part of since 1998.
Before making a decision, Showunmi intends to consult with key stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu and former governors Gbenga Daniel, Ibikunle Amosun, and incumbent governor Dapo Abiodun. He emphasized the need for intentional good governance and pledged to elevate the conversation around development in the state. If he decides to join the Labour Party and becomes governor, Showunmi guarantees that the people of Ogun State will witness an unprecedented level of good governance.
The Labour Party’s invitation to Showunmi reflects their desire for a credible and experienced candidate to challenge the current APC government in the 2027 governorship election. As the political landscape in Ogun State continues to evolve, the outcome of Showunmi’s consideration will be closely watched, with potential implications for the state’s governance and development.
