Fulani must produce Muslim deputy gov, SSG for peace to return to Plateau - Ubandoma

The National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Barr. Solomon Dalyop Mwantiri, urged youths in crisis‑prone communities of Plateau State to defend themselves against Fulani bandits and terrorists. He made the appeal during the mass burial of twelve miners killed by gunmen at a mining site in the Barkin Ladi local government area. Mwantiri argued that, because the federal and state governments and security agencies have failed to protect the people, it is imperative for youths to take action. He warned that the attackers only understand violence and that youths must be prepared to respond in kind.

Mwantiri criticized the government’s silence, saying it is being perceived as encouragement to the terrorists. If this continues, he warned, the people will have no option but to defend themselves. He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, and security agencies to take immediate action to address the situation.

The mass burial was attended by grieving families, community leaders, clergymen and politicians. Addressing the crowd, Mwantiri expressed frustration with governmental inaction and the continual loss of lives. He appealed to clergymen and politicians to unite and work toward a solution, emphasizing that the terrorists do not discriminate by political affiliation or religious belief, making collective self‑defence essential.

Plateau State has been volatile, with frequent attacks by Fulani bandits and terrorists resulting in significant loss of life and property. Growing frustration over the government’s inability to provide adequate security has fueled desperation and anger in the community, reflected in Mwantiri’s call to action. The state government and security agencies have faced criticism for their handling of the crisis, and it remains to be seen what measures they will implement.

In recent years, the Nigerian government has been criticized for its overall handling of insecurity, and the Plateau State crisis is one of several security challenges requiring a comprehensive, effective response to address the root causes of conflict. The international community has offered support to Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, and it is hoped that such assistance will contribute to a lasting solution.
