The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu if he is found guilty of tampering with Nigeria’s tax laws. The demand follows allegations that the Tinubu administration altered tax statutes passed by the National Assembly before they were gazetted, an act the party describes as serious executive misconduct and a breach of the constitution.
The controversy emerged when the House of Representatives identified discrepancies between the tax laws approved by lawmakers and the versions officially published. Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, a member of the House, argued that his legislative rights were violated because the gazetted tax laws differed from what lawmakers debated and passed. In response, the House established a seven‑member ad‑hoc committee to investigate the differences.
In a statement signed by its national chairman, Falalu Bello, the PRP claimed that the executive secretly altered bills after they were passed by the National Assembly without legislative approval. The party warned that such actions threaten democracy and due process, asserting that no one is above the law. Bello labeled the alleged conduct “an audacious act of executive dishonesty” and “a reckless disdain for the rule of law, separation of powers, and the constitutional order.”
The PRP is demanding a full, open investigation to identify and punish all those involved. If evidence implicates President Tinubu in the alleged manipulations, the party says his impeachment should occur without delay. It also calls for the immediate suspension of the disputed tax laws until all inconsistencies are resolved, threatening judicial intervention if the matter is not addressed promptly.
The party’s call for impeachment underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the need for governmental accountability. By emphasizing respect for the rule of law and the constitutional order, the PRP seeks to protect Nigeria’s democracy and economic stability. As the investigation proceeds, citizens, civil‑society groups, and lawmakers are urged to resist what the party describes as an assault on constitutional order and to ensure that justice prevails.
