Nigeria’s Insecurity Woes: Kwankwaso Urges President Tinubu to Act
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has criticized the government of President Bola Tinubu for lacking the political will to combat insecurity. Speaking in Kano on Tuesday, Kwankwaso emphasized the need for the president to take decisive action to address the country’s security challenges.
Kwankwaso made the remarks while unveiling the Kano State Government’s new 2000 Neighborhood Security Network. He stressed that the Nigerian military has a reputation for being one of the most gallant and effective military formations globally, having participated in international peacekeeping missions in countries such as Darfur and Liberia. However, he argued that the government is not providing the necessary support to enable the military to perform its duties effectively.
The NNPP national leader expressed concern that many Nigerians are being killed or injured by criminals, with perpetrators often escaping justice. He called on the government to apologize to Nigerians for its handling of the insecurity situation. Kwankwaso, who previously served as Minister of Defense, emphasized the importance of providing the military with the necessary resources and support to tackle the country’s security challenges.
Historically, the Nigerian military has a distinguished record of service, having excelled in international peacekeeping missions. Kwankwaso urged President Tinubu to provide the military with the necessary equipment and resources to address the current security challenges. He also pledged that, if elected president in 2027, he would prioritize the recruitment of over one million military personnel to enhance the country’s security capabilities.
Kwankwaso emphasized that any government that fails to protect the lives and properties of its citizens has failed in its primary responsibility. He advocated for the incorporation of community-based security initiatives, such as the Kano Neighborhood Security Network, into the national security framework to boost morale and effectiveness. The NNPP presidential hopeful urged the federal government to work closely with state and local authorities to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the country’s insecurity challenges.
