Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s government for lacking the political will to tackle Nigeria’s insecurity. Speaking in Kano on Tuesday, Kwankwaso urged the president to take decisive action to address the country’s security challenges while unveiling the Kano State Government’s new 2,000‑member Neighborhood Security Network.

Kwankwaso highlighted the Nigerian military’s reputation as one of the most gallant and effective forces globally, noting its participation in international peace‑keeping missions in Darfur, Liberia and other conflict zones. Despite this distinguished record, he argued that the government is failing to provide the necessary support for the military to perform its duties effectively. As a former Minister of Defense, Kwankwaso stressed the importance of equipping the armed forces with adequate resources and urged President Tinubu to supply the needed equipment to confront current security threats.

The NNPP leader expressed concern that many Nigerians are being killed or injured by criminals who often escape justice, and called on the government to apologise for its handling of the insecurity situation. He pledged that, if elected president in 2027, he would prioritise the recruitment of over one million military personnel to strengthen the nation’s security capabilities.

Kwankwaso also advocated for the integration of community‑based security initiatives, such as the Kano Neighborhood Security Network, into the national security framework to boost morale and effectiveness. He urged the federal government to collaborate closely with state and local authorities in developing a comprehensive strategy to address Nigeria’s insecurity, emphasizing that any government that fails to protect the lives and property of its citizens has failed in its primary responsibility.
