Former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and APC chieftain Farouk Aliyu has asserted that the internal conflicts plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are not the result of APC interference. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily,” Aliyu stressed that the APC has no intention of establishing a one‑party state in Nigeria.
According to Aliyu, the PDP’s problems stem from its own internal decisions, particularly the selection of its presidential candidate and running mate for the 2023 elections. He pointed to the episode in which PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar initially considered Nyesom Wike as his running mate, only to later choose someone else. Wike’s subsequent public disagreement with the party’s leadership, Aliyu said, is an internal PDP issue, not a consequence of APC actions.
Aliyu acknowledged that continued strife within the PDP could inadvertently benefit the APC, but he reiterated that the APC is not responsible for the PDP’s difficulties. He emphasized that his party has no plans to undermine Nigeria’s multi‑party system or create a one‑party state.
Since its 2023 national convention, the PDP has been beset by internal conflicts and power struggles, raising doubts about its unity and capacity to challenge the APC in future elections. As Nigeria’s political landscape evolves, these ongoing issues within the PDP are likely to have significant implications for the country’s broader political dynamics. While the APC, as the ruling party, is expected to remain a dominant force, the PDP’s internal turmoil may weaken its ability to mount a strong opposition. Nigerians will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold and shape the nation’s political future.
