Hamas denies responsibility for Rafah blast — RT World News

A bomb blast struck an Israeli armored vehicle in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, injuring an officer. Hamas says the incident occurred in an area fully controlled by the Israeli military and denies responsibility for the explosion. The Palestinian group has called on the international community to pressure Israel to honor a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that took effect on October 10. Under that agreement, Israeli forces were to withdraw from parts of the enclave, and Hamas was to release the last 20 Israeli hostages in exchange for about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

Hamas maintains it bears no responsibility for any incidents since the ceasefire began, especially regarding explosives it claims were planted by the occupation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, blamed Hamas for the blast, arguing that the group “has no plan to disarm,” a core requirement of the truce. Hamas responded by urging Israel to adhere to the agreement and stop fabricating excuses that could escalate the conflict, reaffirming its commitment to the terms and calling on Israel to implement the signed accords.

The incident underscores the fragility of the ceasefire, which has been in place for several weeks. Despite the agreement, Israeli airstrikes have continued, and humanitarian aid remains insufficient, worsening conditions in Gaza, according to UN agencies and regional mediators. Palestinians accuse Israel of violating the ceasefire, which was brokered after Hamas’s surprise attack in October 2023 that killed 1,200 people and took 250 hostages. Gaza health authorities report that over 70,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli operations in the enclave.

The international community is being urged to pressure Israel to comply with the ceasefire and refrain from fabricating justifications for further escalation. The situation remains volatile, with both sides accusing each other of breaching the agreement, highlighting the urgent need for a lasting and sustainable solution to a conflict that has caused immense human suffering and loss of life.
