Nigeria Tax Reforms to Start January 2026

The implementation of Nigeria’s new tax reforms is set to commence on January 1, 2026, as planned, according to Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee. Oyedele reaffirmed the timeline while addressing journalists after a meeting between the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee, led by Joseph Tegbe, and President Bola Tinubu in Lagos.

The new tax laws aim to provide relief to Nigerians and stimulate economic growth. Oyedele explained that the reforms are designed to benefit the majority of the population, with the bottom 98% of workers either exempt from paying Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax or facing lower tax rates. Additionally, 97% of small businesses will be exempt from corporate income tax, Value-Added Tax (VAT), and withholding tax, while large businesses can expect a reduction in their tax liabilities.

The goal of these reforms, according to Oyedele, is to promote economic growth, inclusivity, and shared prosperity for Nigerians. The committee is satisfied with the progress made so far and is looking forward to the implementation of the new laws on January 1, 2026. The reforms are expected to have a positive impact on the country’s economy, providing relief to individuals and businesses alike.

The visit of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee to President Tinubu’s residence in Lagos was an opportunity for the committee to brief the president on the progress made in implementing the new tax policies. The meeting underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition to the new tax regime.

As the implementation date approaches, Nigerians can expect significant changes in the country’s tax landscape. The new laws are intended to reduce the tax burden on individuals and small businesses, while promoting economic growth and development. With the commencement of the new tax reforms on January 1, 2026, Nigeria is poised to take a significant step towards achieving its economic goals. The success of these reforms will depend on effective implementation and monitoring, and the government’s ability to address any challenges that may arise during the transition period.
