The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, credited President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 presidential victory in Rivers State to the decisive support of the Ikwerre people. Speaking during a Christmas outreach visit to the Emohua and Ikwerre local government areas, Wike highlighted how the Ikwerre community’s votes were crucial in delivering Tinubu’s win in the state.
Wike reflected on the political landscape and reaffirmed his group’s commitment to President Tinubu’s administration. He warned against “new supporters” who have recently begun rallying behind the president, stressing that genuine loyalty is shown during difficult times, not only when success is assured. He reminded the Ikwerre community of the risks they took by backing Tinubu when his chances of winning were uncertain, noting that their votes were instrumental in securing the president’s mandate in Rivers State.
The minister also addressed regional representation, asserting that the South must be allowed to complete an eight‑year tenure in power, irrespective of party affiliation. He urged continued support for President Tinubu, emphasizing that the region’s full term will be fulfilled through his administration. After 2031, when the South’s tenure concludes, the region will decide its next steps, according to Wike.
Wike’s remarks illuminate the political dynamics in Nigeria, especially concerning regional representation and party loyalty. As the country navigates its political landscape, his comments underscore the importance of consistency and commitment in political relationships, with the South’s upcoming transition drawing close attention both domestically and internationally.
