Gov Ododo signs two new revenue laws

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has enacted two new revenue laws to boost the state’s income and improve the transparency of tax collection. Signed into effect on Thursday, the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service Establishment Law, 2025, and the Kogi State Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law, 2025, introduce a digital, technology‑driven approach that minimizes human interference and enhances accountability in the revenue‑collection process.

A key provision exempts individuals earning less than N800,000 annually from paying taxes, easing the financial burden on low‑income earners and supporting economic growth. The laws also simplify procedures for businesses wishing to invest in the state, reducing compliance costs and creating a more favourable business environment.

Governor Ododo says the primary objectives are to strengthen the state’s economy, ensure fairness in tax collection, and protect citizens’ dignity. By establishing a more transparent and efficient system, the government aims to increase revenue, allocate resources more effectively, and reduce revenue leakage.

The reforms are expected to spur economic development in Kogi State, enabling better public services and infrastructure improvements that benefit all residents. Stakeholders will closely monitor the laws’ impact, and further reforms may follow as the state continues to refine its revenue‑collection processes to support sustained growth.
