Oil prices have fallen after a U.S. military operation seized Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, whose country holds the world’s largest proven crude reserves. The prospect of a larger Venezuelan oil supply has raised concerns about oversupply, adding pressure to a market already sliding in recent months. In early Asian trade, Brent Crude slipped 0.21 percent to $60.62 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate fell 0.35 percent to $57.12, both recovering from earlier lows.

The operation, which involved bombing military targets and taking Maduro and his wife into custody on federal narcotrafficking charges in New York, carries significant implications for the global oil market. President Donald Trump announced plans for the United States to “run” Venezuela and dispatch U.S. firms to repair its oil infrastructure, which has suffered from years of under‑investment and sanctions. Venezuela’s output now hovers around one million barrels per day, a sharp decline from the 3.5 million barrels per day it produced in 1999.

Analysts caution that boosting Venezuelan production will be neither easy nor swift. UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo notes that “any recovery in production would require substantial investment given the crumbling infrastructure resulting from years of mismanagement and underinvestment.” The country’s oil sector faces major hurdles, including a chronic lack of investment and a global supply glut that has depressed prices. The broader decline in oil prices is also linked to factors such as the ongoing tariff war and the conflict in Ukraine.

Despite these challenges, a potential increase in Venezuelan oil supply could significantly affect the global market. As events in Venezuela unfold, the international community will be watching closely for their impact on the world economy.
