The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Isa Ashiru, has urged registered voters to reject apathy and prepare to vote in the March 11 governorship and House of Assembly elections. He emphasized that a vote for the PDP represents a vote for freedom from insecurity and protection against forced dismissals without benefits in the state civil service.
Ashiru called on voters to set aside their experiences of the recently concluded presidential and National Assembly polls and to turn out in large numbers for the main opposition party’s candidates. He warned that voters should not be demoralized by the outcomes of the last elections and should not refrain from casting their ballots.
In a statement released on Sunday by the PDP Campaign Media and Publicity Deputy Director, Reuben Buhari, Ashiru praised voters for their strong support for the party in the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections. In those contests, the PDP won 14 of the 23 local government areas (LGAs) in Kaduna, while the Labour Party secured seven LGAs and the All Progressives Congress (APC) won two. The PDP also captured all three senatorial seats and ten of the sixteen House of Representatives seats, whereas the APC and Labour Party obtained four and two seats respectively.
Consequently, Ashiri argued that voting for the PDP, regardless of party differences, would guarantee freedom for the people after eight years of APC’s draconian rule in the state. He said, “If our dream is to have a secure, prosperous Kaduna State, then we owe it to ourselves and our families to resolve to go and vote for the PDP.” He warned that abstaining from voting would lead to more civil servants being dismissed with impunity or forced into retirement without benefits, labour leaders being persecuted for defending their members, continued tuition fee hikes in tertiary institutions, and the further erosion of traditional institutions.
He added that non‑participation would allow ongoing demolitions of homes and shops, forced land seizures, and the worsening insecurity that now plagues Kaduna. “Not going out to vote for the PDP would ensure the continuation of these and many more,” Ashiru said. “By strategically closing ranks and putting the results of past elections behind us, we will secure enough votes to ensure that the APC never again brings hardship to the residents of Kaduna State.”
