PDP Chairman: Power Resides with the People, Not Bigwigs

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emphasized its reliance on eligible voters to win elections, rather than depending on influential party members. This stance was expressed by the PDP Chairman in Ondo State, Mr. Modupe Aisida, during a recent address in Akure. Aisida noted that despite the departure of several high-profile members, including governors, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP’s strength lies in its electorate.

Referencing the 2023 presidential election, Aisida highlighted the surprising loss of former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu in his home state, as well as the loss of current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Lagos State. He also mentioned Tinubu’s loss in Osun State. These outcomes, according to Aisida, demonstrate the significance of the people’s power in shaping election results.

The PDP chairman stressed the importance of building strong institutions, rather than relying on individual strongmen. He expressed confidence in the party’s ability to move forward, despite the defection of some members, and emphasized that true power resides with the people. Aisida questioned the motivations behind the defections, suggesting that many were driven by selfish interests.

Regarding the 2027 presidential election, Aisida stated that the PDP would provide a fair and democratic platform for all aspirants. He confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan would be given the opportunity to exercise his democratic rights if he chooses to run. The party has reportedly corrected mistakes made in the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election and has zoned the 2027 presidency to the southern part of the country.

Aisida denied any factional divisions within the party, both at the state and national levels. The PDP’s focus on grassroots support and democratic principles is seen as a key strategy in upcoming elections. As the party prepares for the 2027 presidential election, its emphasis on the power of the people and commitment to fair democratic processes may prove crucial in determining its success.
