Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Resigns NNPP Membership

Kano State Governor Resigns from New Nigeria People’s Party Amid Internal Crises

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and the need to safeguard the broader interest of the people of Kano State. The governor’s decision was made public in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Friday.

In a letter addressed to the chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, Gwale Local Government Area, Governor Yusuf officially communicated his decision to withdraw from the party, effective January 23rd, 2026. He expressed gratitude to the party for the platform and support extended to him throughout his political engagement with the NNPP.

The governor’s resignation comes amid persistent internal disputes and legal challenges that have continued to unsettle the party’s structure nationwide. He pointed to growing disenfranchisement among party members, which has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable.

Governor Yusuf stated that his decision was guided strictly by public interest considerations, following careful reflection. He emphasized that the decision was taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State.

The governor’s resignation is not an isolated incident, as 21 members of the State Assembly, 8 members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government chairmen of Kano state have also resigned from the party. The party Secretary, Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the governor’s resignation, commending him for his laudable projects on infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment.

The resignation of Governor Yusuf and other key party members is likely to have significant implications for the NNPP’s structure and operations in Kano State. As the party navigates these challenges, it remains to be seen how it will affect the political landscape of the state. The governor’s commitment to the progress of Kano State is expected to continue, despite his resignation from the party.
