APC Forms 2026 Convention Committee with Key Leaders

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has established a Central Coordination Committee to oversee preparations for its 2026 National Convention, a key event in Nigeria’s political calendar. The move is designed to ensure a structured and orderly process for the party’s top-level gathering.

In a statement signed by National Secretary Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, the party announced the committee’s formation. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma will serve as Chairman, with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as Vice Chairman. Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni is appointed Secretary.

The 73-member committee includes a broad spectrum of party stakeholders from across Nigeria. It comprises serving governors from 16 states—including Kano, Lagos, Rivers, and Borno—as well as senators and prominent national figures. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin are among the listed members.

The National Convention, scheduled for 2026, is pivotal for the APC as it will formalize the party’s leadership structure and set the direction for the next general election cycle. The convention typically involves the election of national officers, including the National Chairman, and is a critical moment for internal cohesion and strategy.

The party stated that further details regarding the committee’s inauguration and the timeline for preparatory activities will be communicated in due course. This structured approach follows a pattern of meticulous planning observed ahead of major party events, reflecting the APC’s focus on maintaining organizational discipline ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The announcement comes as the APC, which currently holds the presidency and a majority in the National Assembly, looks to consolidate its ranks. The inclusion of governors from both APC strongholds and states where the party faces significant opposition underscores an intent to manage internal interests as it prepares for the convention and future electoral contests.

The Central Coordination Committee’s work will be closely watched, as its success in managing the convention process could influence party unity and the APC’s overall preparedness for the next electoral cycle. Updates on the committee’s schedule and the convention’s logistics are expected in subsequent party communiqués.
