APC Youth Membership Dominates at 49.8 Percent

APC Claims Youth Majority as Membership Drive Accelerates

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s ruling party, asserts that nearly half of its registered members are young adults, signaling a significant demographic shift in its political base, according to statements from its National Chairman.

Nentawe Yilwatda disclosed that 49.8 percent of APC members are between the ages of 18 and 35, based on the latest party data. Speaking on TVC’s Sunday Politics, Yilwatda contrasted the current composition with past perceptions, stating, “Our party is youthful, unlike before when we were deceived into thinking that most of the youths were with certain individuals. Now, we have proven to the world that most of the youths are with the APC.”

The claim positions the APC as having a robust youth presence amid Nigeria’s youthful population, where individuals under 25 constitute over 60% of the demographic. Political engagement from this cohort is often considered pivotal for electoral outcomes and policy direction.

Yilwatda’s remarks coincide with the party’s ambitious membership expansion target. He previously announced the APC’s goal to reach 20 million members, noting that its ongoing electronic registration drive has already garnered approximately 12 million members. This digital enrollment process is central to the party’s strategy to document and verify supporters nationwide efficiently.

The assertion of a dominant youth base follows a historical narrative of young Nigerians often being politically disengaged or aligning with opposition or non-partisan movements. By highlighting the 49.8% figure, the APC seeks to counter that narrative and project itself as the primary political home for Nigeria’s next generation.

Analysts note that such demographic data, while self-reported, serves strategic purposes. It aims to attract youthful aspirants, shape campaign messaging, and demonstrate viability to international partners concerned about inclusive governance. However, independent verification of party membership statistics is typically unavailable.

The emphasis on youth membership also raises questions about the party’s ability to translate numerical strength into active participation and leadership roles for young people within its structure. The APC’s claim suggests a realignment that could influence its policy priorities and candidate selection ahead of future electoral cycles.

As the 2027 election cycle approaches, the APC’s reported youth majority, if sustained, may redefine its public identity and competitive strategy. The ongoing e-registration drive will be closely watched as a barometer for both organizational strength and the authenticity of its youth demographic claims. The party’s capacity to mobilize this reported base will ultimately determine the practical impact of its membership assertions on Nigeria’s political landscape.
