APC Suspends Abia State Congresses for Consultations

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended all planned state, local government, and ward congresses in Abia State, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) announced on Wednesday.

The suspension, detailed in a statement signed by National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, aims to allow for ongoing consultations and the completion of essential preparatory and administrative steps. The party stated this pause is necessary to guarantee the congresses are conducted in an orderly, transparent, and credible manner.

According to the statement, the APC will formally notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the revised schedule once internal processes are finalized. No new dates were provided in the initial communication.

The congresses are critical internal party exercises to elect state executives and delegate representatives for higher-level conventions. Their postponement in Abia State, a southeastern stronghold of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), underscores the APC’s focus on strengthening its organizational structure ahead of future electoral cycles. The party emphasized that the suspension is a procedural measure to uphold internal democratic standards, not a reflection of conflict or failure.

The NWC’s decision halts a key phase of the APC’s nationwide grassroots reorganization. Party members and observers will be attentive to the new timetable, as it signals the APC’s readiness to build a cohesive platform in Abia State. The statement concluded that further updates will be communicated through official channels once the preparatory work is complete.
