As part of its efforts to curb the deadly Lassa fever outbreak, the Ondo State Government has begun distributing pesticides in the state’s most affected areas to eradicate rats. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control recently identified Ondo as one of the states with a high prevalence of Lassa fever. The distribution targeted the local government areas of Owo, Akure South, Akure North, Ose, Akoko South‑West, Akoko South‑East, and Idanre.
At the launch of the rat‑eradication campaign in Owo Town, the headquarters of Owo Local Government, State Commissioner for Health Dr. Banji Ajaka affirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating the disease. He noted that three treatment centres, including the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, are operational to ensure easy access to care. “The government has produced raticides, which are being distributed free of charge to residents. We urge everyone to use them appropriately,” he said. Dr. Ajaka also praised the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, for his support and urged the community to adopt proper food processing, avoid sun‑drying food, maintain environmental hygiene, practice proper waste management, and discourage bush burning.
In her opening remarks, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health Mrs. Folukemi Aladenola said the government is prepared to drastically reduce the number of infections each year. She thanked stakeholders for their support and called on everyone to play an active role in the campaign.
Responding, Oba Ogunoye commended Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for his health sector initiatives, particularly in combating Lassa fever, and noted that Owo residents are aware of how to tackle the disease. He urged the community to support the government by using the pesticides correctly to ensure a healthier living environment.
