NNPC, Dangote Renew Strategic Alliance for Energy Security

NNPC and Dangote Renew Strategic Partnership to Boost Nigeria’s Energy Security

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and the Dangote Group have renewed a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening national energy security and expanding domestic refining capacity. The renewed alliance, finalised on Saturday during a high-level meeting at the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex in Lagos, underscores a coordinated push to transform Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

The meeting, led by NNPC Ltd. Group Chief Executive Officer Bashir Ojulari, included a tour of the 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery—the largest in Africa. Both organisations committed to deepening operational and commercial collaboration, focusing on creating synergies across assets, infrastructure, capital, and markets to enhance business visibility between the two entities.

Ojulari credited Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, for his perseverance in completing the refinery, a project pivotal to positioning Nigeria as a continental downstream hub. He highlighted the partnership’s potential to expand into upstream activities, trading, shipping, and gas supplies. Ojulari also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s policy reforms, describing them as instrumental in fostering an investor-friendly environment for such large-scale collaborations.

Dangote emphasised that the synergy would deliver economies of scale and unlock value for Nigerian consumers. The partnership builds on NNPC Ltd.’s existing 7.25 per cent equity stake in the refinery, a direct investment aligned with national objectives to curb fuel imports and bolster local processing.

This renewed cooperation comes as Nigeria seeks to achieve self-sufficiency in petroleum products and stimulate industrial growth. By integrating NNPC Ltd.’s infrastructure and market access with Dangote’s refining capacity, the alliance aims to stabilise supply chains and support long-term economic prosperity. Further details on specific joint ventures are expected as implementation plans advance.
