Adamawa Governor Fintiri Defects to APC, Backs Southern 2027 President

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a lack of presidential ambition within the PDP and advocating for a southern president in the 2027 general elections. The governor announced his move during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’, explaining that he could not remain in a party where no candidate had expressed interest in contesting the presidency, a stance he said would jeopardize his political future.

According to Fintiri, his decision aligns with the broader interests of Adamawa’s people, seeking closer ties with the federal government for enhanced development. He emphasized that in the 2027 polls, a northerner has “no business” running for president, insisting it is the south’s turn to occupy the office. This view touches on Nigeria’s long-standing, informal zoning system, where the presidency rotates between regions to foster national unity. After the 2023 election of President Bola Tinubu, a southerner, Fintiri’s comments suggest a push to extend southern tenure, a point likely to spark debate among political stakeholders.

The governor, a prominent figure in the PDP before his defection, revealed that he had not encountered any PDP member willing to declare presidential aspirations. “I have been a central player in this party, my former party, PDP. I have not seen any candidate in the party that has come out to tell me he wants to contest and I cannot remain and jeopardize my political future,” he stated. His exit reflects a broader trend of political realignments in Nigeria, where defections from the PDP to the APC have intensified since the latter’s 2015 ouster of the PDP from federal power.

Fintiri also addressed his relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a PDP stalwart and 2023 presidential candidate. He confirmed they remain cordial, noting, “I still have. There is nothing that has gone bad. It is just that everybody has taken their political ways, and I am today in APC, they are in another party.” This underscores the personal nature of Nigeria’s political shifts, where alliances often adapt to strategic interests.

The defection bolsters the APC’s footprint in Adamawa, a northeastern state grappling with security challenges, and may influence regional dynamics ahead of 2027. While the presidential race is years away, discussions on zoning and candidate viability are already shaping party strategies. Fintiri’s stance on southern presidency highlights the persistent influence of regional considerations in Nigeria’s electoral politics, a factor that could redefine coalition-building within both major parties.

As the political landscape evolves, such moves signal ongoing recalibrations driven by ambition, governance priorities, and the quest for inclusive representation. The implications for the PDP’s cohesion and the APC’s dominance will unfold in the coming years, framing the context for Nigeria’s next democratic transition.
