PDP Inaugurates Adamawa Local Caretaker Committees Post-Defection

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated caretaker committees for all 21 local government areas in Adamawa State, installing interim leadership structures to manage party affairs ahead of future elections.

Each local government caretaker committee comprises a chairman, a secretary, and three ex-officio members, all appointed to serve in a temporary capacity. This arrangement aligns with the PDP’s constitutional provisions for managing party affairs during过渡 periods. The oath of office was administered by legal practitioner John Tunoh, who charged the new officials to strictly adhere to both the PDP and national constitutions in their duties.

The inauguration ceremony took place in Yola, the state capital. Belmont Dogo, the PDP Adamawa State interim chairman, emphasized the critical role of the local government structure, stating, “As local government caretaker committee members, you represent the engine room of the party in your respective areas.” He tasked the committees with repositioning the party, rebuilding confidence among members, and preparing the groundwork for future electoral successes.

Inuwa Umar, caretaker chairman for Fufore Local Government Area, responded on behalf of all committee members, pledging their commitment to contributing to the party’s growth and stability at the grassroots level.

This organizational move comes amid significant political realignment in the state. Last month, on February 27, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri officially defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading a mass exodus that included all state commissioners, special advisers, other appointees, as well as PDP members in the national and state Houses of Assembly. The defections left the PDP in Adamawa with a substantially reduced footprint and a pressing need to rebuild its structure and membership.

The deployment of caretaker committees is therefore a strategic step toward grassroots restructuring. The interim leadership is expected to focus on internal reconciliation, reactivation of ward units, and regaining public trust ahead of the next electoral cycle. Their performance will be pivotal in determining the party’s capacity to recover from the recent losses and重新 establish a viable political presence in Adamawa State.
