SDP Imo State appoints interim chair for 2027 poll

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) Imo State Chapter has announced an interim executive committee to steer its affairs in preparation for the 2027 general elections. The new leadership, unveiled at a recent gathering, is tasked with revitalizing the party’s structure across all 27 local government areas in the state and mobilizing for membership registration drives.

Chigozie Ekeogu was appointed as the interim State Chairman. He will be supported by a team that includes Achonwa Amaobichukwu as Organizing Secretary, Ngozi Amajuoyi as Women Leader, and Bright Nze as Labour and Civil Society Secretary, among others.

The move was confirmed by Ifeanyi Henry Eluwa, the National Youth Leader of SDP and immediate past Imo State Chairman. Eluwa stated the interim committee’s primary mandate is to strengthen party organizations at the ward and local government levels, ultimately guiding SDP through its state congress and into subsequent electoral contests. He emphasized the party’s foundational ideology of Social Justice and Good Governance, principles historically associated with the late MKO Abiola’s presidential campaign.

Eluwa highlighted the SDP’s unified status as a key strength, noting the absence of internal factions makes it a strategically viable option for politicians. He revealed that over 80 prospective candidates for 2027 have already expressed interest in joining the party due to its perceived stability. He also dismissed ongoing rumors of a merger with the Action Peoples Party (APP), clarifying that SDP may consider coalitions under specific circumstances but has no such agreement with APP.

In his acceptance remarks, Chairman Ekeogu, on behalf of the executive, thanked the party leadership for the appointment and pledged to consolidate SDP’s presence statewide. He vowed to focus on building robust structures from the ward level upward to ensure effective participation in the 2027 election cycle.

The formation of this interim executive signals SDP’s intent to become a significant player in Imo State’s political landscape, positioning itself as a cohesive alternative ahead of the next general elections.
