SDP Imo State Interim Executive to Strengthen 2027 Structures

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) Imo State Chapter has constituted a new Interim Executive Committee tasked with reorganizing the party’s structures ahead of the 2027 general elections. The appointment, announced by the party’s National Youth Leader and immediate past Imo State Chairman, Ifeanyi Henry Eluwa, names Chigozie Ekeogu as the interim State Chairman.

Eluwa stated the interim leadership is mandated to galvanize membership registration and fortify the party’s presence across all 27 Local Government Areas in Imo State. “Today, we announce Gozie Ekeogu as the Interim Chairman of SDP, Imo State. His leadership will take us to congress and prepare us to participate effectively in electoral contests,” Eluwa said. He emphasized the party’s adherence to its founding ideologies of Social Justice and Good Governance, principles historically associated with the campaign of the late M.K.O. Abiola.

According to Eluwa, the SDP remains a unified and democratically viable party without factional divisions, a stability he credited for attracting significant interest. He noted that over 80 prospective aspirants for various elective offices in 2027 have already indicated a willingness to join the party due to its cohesive structure. He also dismissed persistent rumors of a merger with the All Progressives Party (APP), clarifying that while coalitions may be considered when strategically necessary, no such agreement exists with APP.

The outgoing chairman pledged to support the interim committee to ensure a seamless transition and solidify party structures at state, local government, and ward levels.

Besides Ekeogu, other executive members include Achonwa Amaobichukwu (Organizing Secretary), Ngozi Amajuoyi (Women Leader), and Bright Nze (Labour and Civil Society Secretary).

In his acceptance speech, Chairman Ekeogu expressed gratitude for the appointment and vowed to strengthen the party’s organization from the grassroots upward. “We promise not to fail the party but to strive tirelessly to build robust structures,” he stated.

The formation of this interim executive marks a strategic move by the SDP to reposition itself as a formidable opposition platform in Imo State, focusing on institutional rebuilding and candidate mobilization years before the 2027 polls. The committee’s immediate priorities include a statewide membership drive and the conduct of state congresses to legitimize its mandate.
