Peter Obi Doubts ADC 2027 Ticket, Vows to Continue

Peter Obi Expresses Uncertainty Over ADC Presidential Ticket for 2027

Former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi has stated that securing the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 elections is not guaranteed. In a video address to supporters, Obi directly responded to questions about his political future, emphasizing that his focus remains on a broader cause rather than a specific party nomination.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s flagbearer in the 2023 election, said, “Someone asked me how I know for sure that the ADC will give me the presidential ticket. I cannot be certain.” He reflected on the challenges of opposition politics in Nigeria, stating, “I keep wondering how we ended up in this situation and what might happen if we decide to stop working on this project.” Despite the uncertainty, he reaffirmed his commitment to his goals and indicated that reported threats would not deter him.

A significant portion of his message was dedicated to thanking his supporters for their perseverance. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by those in the opposition, noting the lack of immediate personal gain. “I thank you for your sacrifice. It’s not easy to be in the opposition in Nigeria, and I’m thankful to those who keep supporting even when there’s no clear reward,” he said.

Obi also voiced caution regarding the stability of political alliances. “How can we be certain that the people we’re working with right now won’t leave us behind tomorrow? I wish we could be sure, but we can’t,” he remarked, highlighting the fluid and often unpredictable nature of Nigerian coalition politics.

While Obi has not formally joined the ADC, his engagement with the party has fueled speculation about his 2027 ambitions. The ADC is a registered but relatively minor political party in Nigeria’s dominant two-party system. Obi’s continued public engagement positions him as a key opposition figure, regardless of his final party affiliation.

His comments underscore the ongoing strategic realignments within Nigeria’s opposition空间 ahead of the next general election. Observers note that Obi’s influence stems largely from his ability to mobilize a significant base, particularly among younger voters and urban professionals disillusioned with the main parties. His uncertainty about the ADC ticket signals that his political path remains a developing story, with potential implications for the coalition-building necessary to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. The next steps will likely involve further negotiations and clarifications from both Obi and the ADC regarding the terms of any potential partnership.
