Obi-Kwankwaso 2027 Election Alliance Gains Momentum

The meeting between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano has intensified speculation about a potential opposition alliance for Nigeria’s 2027 elections. The Sallah visit, confirmed by photos and reported by multiple sources, follows a history of failed merger talks before the 2023 vote.

According to Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, the discussions focused on “strategising for our collective interest to make Nigeria work again.” This engagement revives a political calculation from 2023, when separate campaigns by Obi—backed by a youth-driven “Obidient” movement—and Kwankwaso—with a strong northern base—were seen as splitting the opposition vote, ultimately contributing to President Bola Tinubu’s victory.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is now mediating renewed talks. Sumner Sambo, Politics Editor at Arise News, said a committee formed by Obasanjo in December has initiated dialogue between the two camps. He noted that Kwankwaso faces internal pressure to join a broader coalition, which would likely need to include other figures like Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi to succeed.

Support for an alliance appears to be growing within the NNPP. Magaji Mato, the party’s National Legal Adviser, described public reaction to the meeting as “overwhelming,” stating Nigerians “have always longed” for such a combination of “younger” and “tested” leaders. He framed the potential partnership as a response to public fatigue with elderly political figures.

Analyst Nduka Odo of Peaceland University called the meeting a “critical turning point” and the opposition’s “only light in the tunnel,” citing the ruling APC’s recent gains through defections. He warned that Tinubu’s political strategy would likely seek to disrupt any coalition, stressing that its success hinges on genuine commitment from both leaders rather than symbolic gestures.

The convergence of these factors—Obasanjo’s facilitation, grassroots enthusiasm, and perceived APC dominance—positions an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance as a focal point for opposition planning ahead of 2027. The talks signal a recognised need to consolidate against a fragmented political landscape, though substantial hurdles over leadership and power-sharing remain from the failed 2023 negotiations.
