NOUN Appoints Ambrose Gowong Head of New Media Unit

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has appointed Ambrose Gowong as Head of its newly established New Media Unit, a move aimed at centralising and professionalising the institution’s digital communication channels. The appointment, approved by the Vice-Chancellor, was communicated via an internal memorandum signed by Deputy Registrar Muyiwa Harrison and obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Mr. Gowong’s primary mandate is to drive the university’s digital engagement strategy. His responsibilities will include overseeing content development, media monitoring, brand positioning, and digital documentation. He will also manage NOUN’s presence across emerging media platforms to ensure effective and wide-reaching information dissemination. Concurrently, he has been designated as the official compere for all university social functions, while academic ceremonies will continue to be moderated by the Registrar.

The establishment of the unit under the Office of the Vice-Chancellor responds to a strategic need to enhance NOUN’s global visibility through a robust digital communication strategy. “The institution urges stakeholders across its faculties, directorates, units and study centres to collaborate with the unit to ensure effective service delivery,” the memorandum stated.

Mr. Gowong brings extensive academic credentials in communication to the role. He holds a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Kaduna Polytechnic, along with a Postgraduate Diploma and a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from NOUN. He also possesses a Master’s in Development Communication from Kaduna State University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Mass Communication.

As Nigeria’s premier open and distance learning institution, NOUN serves a vast and geographically dispersed student population. The creation of a dedicated New Media Unit underscores the university’s recognition that modern, coordinated digital outreach is essential for student engagement, academic promotion, and institutional branding. Mr. Gowong’s appointment is expected to streamline communications and amplify NOUN’s presence in the increasingly competitive digital landscape.
