Lagos APC urges opposition to rebuild for 2031

Lagos APC Urges Opposition to Focus on 2031 Elections, Calls Recent Disputes Misplaced

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has advised opposition political parties to redirect their efforts toward internal rebuilding and preparation for the 2031 general elections, describing current challenges to the 2027 electoral mandates as unproductive.

According to a statement released by the Lagos APC spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, on Wednesday, the party acknowledged the role of opposition in a democracy but insisted such engagement must be realistic and respectful of the outcomes of the last election cycle. The statement contended that the 2027 results demonstrated continued public confidence in the APC’s leadership and developmental policies.

The ruling party criticized opposition groups for what it termed inadequate preparation and a lack of cohesion, pointing to hurried alliances formed just before party primaries as evidence of disorganization. “Rather than dissipating energy contesting settled mandates, we strongly advise opposition elements to focus on rebuilding, re-strategizing, and preparing meaningfully for the 2031 elections,” the statement read.

APC emphasized that governance demands seriousness, reiterating its commitment to delivering on infrastructure projects, economic opportunities, security, and public welfare. The party urged opposition actors to adopt a more constructive approach by accepting electoral outcomes and current political realities.

“The road to 2031 offers ample time for reflection, internal reforms, and the development of credible alternatives,” the statement added, suggesting the opposition use the coming years to develop substantive policy platforms. It concluded by calling on all political stakeholders in Lagos to contribute positively to the state’s peace and progress in the interim.

The statement comes amid recurring political tensions in Nigeria following the 2027 elections, in which the APC consolidated its hold on Lagos State, a critical political and economic stronghold. With Nigeria’s presidential and state elections scheduled for 2031, the APC’s remarks signal an intent to set the narrative early, urging a shift from retrospective disputes to forward-looking preparation. The ruling party’s message frames the next four years as a period for consolidation, while challenging the opposition to undergo genuine renewal if it seeks to compete effectively in the future.
