Kebbi Lawmaker Defects to APC Citing PDP Divisions

Ibrahim Mohammed, the House of Representatives member representing the Birnin Kebbi/Kalgo/Bunza Federal Constituency, has officially switched his political affiliation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC). The lawmaker announced the transition on Tuesday, marking a significant shift in Kebbi State’s parliamentary representation.

In a public statement, Mohammed attributed his decision to prolonged leadership disputes and internal factionalism within the PDP. He noted that ongoing administrative conflicts have complicated legislative coordination and limited the capacity of committed representatives to execute constituency projects. The lawmaker stated that moving to the APC aligns with his objective to operate within a more structured political framework capable of sustaining development initiatives.

Mohammed confirmed that the transition followed consultations with community stakeholders, political allies, and voters across the three affected local government areas. He formally submitted his resignation to his ward party executives in Birnin Kebbi and delivered official notification to the Speaker of the House of Representatives to update legislative records. The procedural steps are designed to maintain uninterrupted representation as his parliamentary mandate continues under a new party platform.

The defection occurs amid documented structural realignments within the PDP in Kebbi State. Recent weeks have seen leadership adjustments, including the departure of State Secretary Abubakar Bawa following internal administrative reviews. Mohammed’s exit contributes to a series of party migrations reported in the region, reflecting broader recalibrations among elected officials and party administrators as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

Parliamentary procedures will now determine the administrative updates required for chamber membership and committee assignments. Constituents and development partners in the constituency will monitor how the transition influences ongoing federal projects and legislative sponsorship. The APC legislative leadership is expected to integrate Mohammed into its caucus structure, while the PDP state chapter addresses the resulting representation vacancy and party reorganization efforts. Continued political realignments may shape alliance formations and legislative voting patterns as stakeholders prepare for the next electoral cycle.
