Kano State House of Assembly Withdraws Impeachment Notice Against Former Deputy Governor

The Kano State House of Assembly has officially withdrawn its notice of impeachment against former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam, following his voluntary resignation from office.

The decision was announced during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Jibril Isma’il, after a motion by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yangurasa. The withdrawal came in line with procedural rules, with Hussaini explaining that continuing with the matter after Abdulsalam’s resignation would be pointless.

“We have withdrawn all charges against him, and the matter has been laid to rest,” Hussaini stated. “Our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty. Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue? We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled.”

The impeachment proceedings had been initiated on March 5, 2025, following allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust. The action was prompted by a petition from the Executive, citing alleged irregularities during Abdulsalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024. The impeachment notice was issued in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

The withdrawal marks the conclusion of a significant political development in Kano State, highlighting the constitutional processes governing the removal of public officials in Nigeria. With Abdulsalam’s resignation and the Assembly’s subsequent withdrawal of charges, the matter has been officially closed, bringing an end to months of political tension in the state.
