Trump Warns of 50% Tariffs on Countries Arming Iran

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose immediate 50 per cent tariffs on any country that supplies weapons to Iran, escalating tensions in the ongoing dispute over Tehran’s military capabilities.

“A Country supplying Military Weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed, on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, 50%, effective immediately. There will be no exclusions or exemptions,” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.

The warning comes as the Trump administration engages in talks with Tehran over potential tariff and sanctions relief. Hours earlier, Trump announced a temporary ceasefire with Iran, which has agreed to reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz for a two-week period.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which roughly 20 per cent of global oil passes, has been a flashpoint in regional tensions. Iran’s agreement to keep it open temporarily marks a significant diplomatic development amid broader negotiations.

Trump’s tariff threat appears aimed at deterring third-party nations from bolstering Iran’s military capacity, particularly as Washington seeks to pressure Tehran over its nuclear programme and regional influence. The move could have wide-reaching implications for international trade and diplomacy, especially for countries with defence ties to both the US and Iran.

While details of the ongoing talks remain limited, the administration’s dual approach—combining punitive threats with offers of sanctions relief—reflects the complex balance of coercion and negotiation in US-Iran relations.

The developments underscore the fragile nature of the current diplomatic engagement and the potential for rapid escalation if either side perceives a breach of the temporary agreements in place.
